And now, two seasons later, the Western crime noir thriller has been greenlighted for an all-new third season. The news comes soon after the second season's finale, released in September 2023. Dark Winds is created by Graham Roland and based on Tony Hillerman’s popular Leaphorn & Chee novel series. Set in the 1970s in a remote town in the Southwest, Dark Winds follows Navajo Tribal Police Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon), and an undercover FBI agent, Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon), who team up to solve murders, robberies, and other brutal crimes within the Navajo Nation. The first two seasons see the men dealing with inexplicable evils, followed by Leaphorn dealing with a personal loss and seeking justice for his loved one. The seasons also see the shifting dynamics between these two crime solvers, as well as Leaphorn’s relationship with his mentee and work partner, Bernadette Manuelito (Jessica Matten). Besides crimes and criminals, the series also explores surreal, spiritual elements that shape the psychological and emotional journeys of the characters.

<![CDATA[This Movie Star's Death Caused Suicide Attempts and Mass Mourning]]> It's always rough when your favorite celebrity dies, whether it be a musician or a movie star. You think back on the impact they had on your life, or how they inspired you. Maybe the one time you were lucky enough to meet them. If they pass away suddenly, or at a young age, the added shock can hit you even harder, the idea that someone was in their prime, or in the middle of an ongoing career, is now gone forever. You won't get to hear new music or see them in new movies; all there is now are the ghosts on film and on the radio.

<![CDATA[Every Good Post-Credits Scene Gets One Thing Right]]> Once a rare cinematic treat, the post-credit scene has become a vital part of the modern cinematic experience. These scenes are just as eagerly anticipated as the films they follow, leaving audiences feeling either utterly gratified or massively disappointed. But how can we distinguish a truly compelling post-credit scene that serves as a powerful storytelling device from one that simply comes across as a tired gimmick? Essentially, it boils down to three critical elements: emotional impact, surprise factor, and relevance to the story or tone. A good post-credits scene is deemed worth the wait when it successfully delivers on at least one of these vital components.

<![CDATA[‘Loki’ Introduced Kang Better Than ‘Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania’]]> Editor's Note: The following article contains spoilers for Loki Season 2.Jonathan Majors' Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as He Who Remains in Loki Season 1 is so good, that it actually works to the detriment of his second and more essential character, Kang the Conqueror. Frankly, Phase 5 of the MCU has frankly gotten off to a bit of a weird start with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023). While not the worst superhero film ever made, the third film in the Ant-Man series feels like it's trying to do way too much while accomplishing very little. All at once, it's trying to be a straightforward movie about Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) and his family, trying to introduce a new facet of the MCU with the Quantum Realm, and introduce the franchise's next big bad. That last goal is undoubtedly the most important to achieve, and thankfully the film gets close to accomplishing it thanks to another fantastic performance from Jonathan Majors as Kang.

<![CDATA[What To Expect From 'The Buccaneers' TV Show Based on Edith Wharton's Book]]> Edith Wharton's novel The Buccaneers has been adapted into a series for Apple TV+ and will premiere on November 8. The series will certainly be compared to Sanditon, the much-beloved Jane Austen adaptation whose third season aired earlier this year on PBS and BritBox. Both are historical romance novels written by literary icons. More specifically, The Buccaneers, just like Sanditon, was not completed at the time of the author's death. But Austen only finished a few chapters of Sanditon – the series departs from her story almost immediately whereas Wharton finished about three fifths of The Buccaneers, which was published in its unfinished state after she died and is often considered one of her best novels. Read on for more of what to expect from Apple TV+'s The Buccaneers.

<![CDATA[This Classic Western Turned a Beloved Hollywood Hero Into a Vicious Monster]]> Sergio Leone's 1968 Hollywood epic Once Upon A Time In The West is widely praised as one of the greatest films in the Western genre (if not the greatest). The Italian director's fourth outing in the genre, following his Clint Eastwood-starring Dollars trilogy, Once Upon A Time is both a love letter and a critique of the Western. It has the staples of tense shootouts, fast-paced action, and sublime imagery of the vast American desert, but at the same time, it manages to deconstruct the iconography through unexpected twists, heightened violence, and a subversive casting decision that manages to reflect a shift in cinema and society all in a single role. Yes, we're talking about Henry Fonda as Frank.

<![CDATA[10 Best Arthouse Action Movies, Ranked]]> While it's possible to describe certain films as being "arthouse," the term isn't a genre in the same way that drama, comedy, or thriller are all types of genres. Arthouse can sometimes be a genre, but it also feels like the term describes a type of movie, based on its style and overall feel. Arthouse movies are often independently made and usually have niche - rather than broad - appeal, and these sorts of films are also distinguished by being intensely personal and sometimes experimental.

<![CDATA[Why That ‘Toy Story’ Theory for ‘Monsters Inc.’ Just Isn’t True]]> On the surface, Toy Story and Monster, Inc. have little in common, but both Pixar franchises feature a pair of unlikely friends who didn't get along when they first met and have a habit of finding trouble. Despite these similarities, the two stories occur in different worlds, one with monsters and the other with living toys. But Monsters, Inc. includes a child from the human world, giving little information about her home. This is how fans believe the two franchises may connect, and some even point to evidence from the films. It's widely known that Pixar includes a constant stream of Easter eggs in each one of their films. From the Pizza Planet truck in each movie to the hints for their new films, Pixar always creates several references to their other works, usually in small, subtle ways. Fans search for these Easter eggs and try to use them to connect otherwise unconnected films.

Those early years of the show were somewhat shaky, given the show was canceled twice - once after the end of its second season, a decision that was reversed resulting in a third season, but then the second cancelation occurred at season 3's end.

<![CDATA[The Best Episode From Each Season of 'Succession']]> Succession was almost instantly recognized as one of the greatest drama shows of all time. HBO's groundbreaking satire about the interior politics of a media empire family and its legacy wrapped its fantastic four-season run earlier this year with the excellent finale, "With Open Eyes." Succession follows the legendary business tycoon Logan Roy (Brian Cox) as he considers retiring from his role as the head of the legacy media empire Waystar Royco. Logan resists the idea of passing down his position as CEO to one of his children, as each has considerable flaws. Kendall (Jeremy Strong) is a recovering drug addict, Roman (Kieran Culkin) is a complete goofball, Shiv (Sarah Snook) supports his political rivals, and Connor (Alan Ruck) has never held any role of significance in his life.

<![CDATA['Memento' Remains Christopher Nolan’s Best Movie About Lying to Yourself]]> One particularly annoying cinema conversation point is when people refer to the structure of Christopher Nolan's Memento as "a gimmick." A gimmick is a hook that serves no point. It gets your attention, but by its very nature has no payoff. If Nolan dressed Guy Pearce in a chicken costume for the entirety of the movie and never explained it, that would be a gimmick. The reverse chronology of Memento is essential to its power because it's the only way to put the audience in the mindset of its brain-damaged detective, Leonard Shelby (Pearce, not wearing a chicken costume). "It's all backwards," Burt (Mark Boone Junior) says in one of the film's more meta moments, but the reverse chronology does pull you into Leonard's world, one where we see the effect without a cause, and can only see the power of causation as we move further back in time. This unique structure gives Memento a hook and its power as Nolan is able to brilliantly intersect time, identity, and memory into his finest feature.

<![CDATA[‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ Left Out a Wild Detail in Jordan Belfort’s Story]]> Martin Scorsese is a meticulous director who leaves no stone unturned when telling his incredible stories. His latest project, Killers of the Flower Moon is no exception. So when we found out that he decided to omit one truly remarkable and fascinating detail out of his epic tale of Jordan Belfort in The Wolf of Wall Street, we obviously had to dig deeper into the why of it all and share it. When Belfort was sent to prison for his various fraudulent securities and trading crimes, his cellmate was none other than Tommy Chong! That's right, one-half of the most famous stoner duo in cinema history, "Cheech (Marin) and Chong" shared a bunk with the character that Leonardo DiCaprio so fabulously brought to life in the movie. This seems like an impossible coincidence that would be worth at least a scene or two, right? So why was it left out when it could have so easily added to the greatness of the movie?

<![CDATA[Piper Laurie’s ‘Carrie’ Performance Changed Horror Villains Forever ]]> With Piper Laurie's passing on October 14th, 2023, Hollywood mourns an icon. Born Rosetta Jacobs, Piper Laurie, as we came to know her once she changed her name after signing a contract with Universal Studios at the age of 18, was a fine actress who withstood the test of time making us a part of her impeccable acting career for more than half a century. She survived '50s Hollywood's starlet-making machine, took a break from acting, and returned to it with gusto before retiring again. In between, she earned three Oscar nominations, an Emmy Award from eight nominations, and a series of other outstanding actor accolades for her performances. Perhaps the most memorable of them is her venerated portrayal of Carrie's mother in Brian De Palma's 1976 horror film, Carrie. As a come-back-present after a fifteen-year-hiatus (Laurie hadn't appeared in films since her Oscar-nominated role in The Hustler in 1961), her portrayal of Margaret White in Carrie earned her a second Oscar nomination. It was as if she never left. And with her mother-from-hell role in the film, Laurie subverted the horror genre.

<![CDATA[Netflix’s ‘Ballerina’ Puts a Twist on the Revenge Thriller]]> Netflix's Ballerina hits all the crucial marks one craves from a revenge thriller. Protagonist Ok-ju (Jeon Jong-Seo), a retired bodyguard with fight training lifted from the John Wick handbook, has a very particular skill set. She aims to avenge a loved one's death. She grimly declares, "I need guns." The cinematography favors shadowy corners and neon-drenched streets, while the action sequences spray enough inventive gore to make David Cronenberg grimace. A woman leading an action thriller isn't even an outlandish concept anymore, despite what some internet comments might say. So how does Ballerina distinguish itself from its peers while still embracing its place in Korean revenge cinema? As it turns out, simply. Ballerina is an unrepentantly humane and woman-centric revenge epic that puts a sleek budget to full effect with impressive panache. Why wait for the actual John Wick spin-off that's also entitled Ballerina when writer-director Lee Chung-hyun's creation is currently streaming?

His work on the Alien franchise, along with Blade Runner and HBO-MAX shows like Raised By Wolves have rightfully made him one of the most celebrated directors of all time. However, he has frequently branched out and explored other types of movies that are about as far away from tail-whipping xenomorphs and killer replicants as possible. One of those triumphant efforts was the harrowing and tragic retelling of Black Hawk Down in 2001. The comprehensive account of the United States' involvement in the civil war-torn Somalia in the early to mid-'90s is both viscerally stunning and emotionally touching on a very personal level.

The Shining, The Green Mile, Carrie, Stand By Me, The Shawshank Redemption, and It among many other modern cinematic classics are all based on King's written works. In some of the adaptations of his books, King even graces the silver screen with a cameo. On occasion, he'll even play himself in projects beyond his own bibliography. He threw out the Red Sox's opening pitch in 2005's Fever Pitch and voiced himself in the Season 12 Simpsons episode, "Insane Clown Poppy." One of his most overlooked contributions to the screen, however, is also his sweetest, as he lent his voice to a scene in an unassuming romantic comedy, which in turn portrays King in a down-to-earth and earnest manner.

<![CDATA[This 'Office' Storyline Was Doomed From the Start]]> Across nine seasons, NBC's The Office told dozens of hilarious and heartwarming stories. Unlike many sitcoms preceding it, the mockumentary managed to sustain narratives over several episodes, not always tying up conflicts before the credits rolled. For the most part, this was a fruitful approach, as it allowed characters to endure consequences, feel emotions, and grow beyond the constraints of a 30-minute block. However, not all storylines were prolific. Will Ferrell's brief run as Deangelo Vickers, the Schrute Farms spinoff attempt, and Andy Bernard's (Ed Helms) slow fall from grace are just a few arcs that fans look back upon with disapproval. <![CDATA[Do Yourself a Favor and Watch ‘Moonlighting’]]> The decade of the 1980s threw a little bit of everything at us when it came to television genres. There were police procedurals like Hill Street Blues, mindless action fare like The A-Team and Knight Rider, medical dramas including St. Elsewhere, and of course, the uber-popular wealthy family nighttime soaps Dallas, Dynasty, and Falcon Crest. But among all these various styles of hour-long serials, there was one show that stood out from the rest for being the perfect combination of all of them, yet a unicorn unto itself: the Glenn Gordon Caron-created mystery comedy series Moonlighting.

<![CDATA[James Marsters on Spike’s Relationship With the Slayer in Audible’s New Series]]> There’s no denying that James Marsters’ blondie baddie vampire Spike was one of the most beloved characters on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Heck, he was even brought back from the clutches of hell after he saved the world in the series finale to reappear for the final season of Angel. Although two decades have passed since the curmudgeonly vamp appeared on television, he’s back in the new Audible series, Slayers: A Buffyverse Story. Catching up with Marsters during a panel at NYCC, Collider’s Maggie Lovitt picked the actor’s brain about who Spike is all these years later.

<![CDATA[Warwick Davis Calls Disney+ "Embarrassing" For Removing ‘Willow’]]> A few months after Willow was removed from Disney+ shortly after its release, Warwick Davis has criticized the decision through his official social media accounts. The actor reprised his role of the titular character in the 2022 television series, after playing the sorcerer in Ron Howard's 1988 film of the same name. But before audiences had a chance of enjoying the show, the company removed it from its streaming service in what was called a "tax write-off" at the time. Since a physical release of the project wasn't launched before its removal, there currently isn't a legal way to watch the series, erasing months of hard work the cast and crew poured into Willow permanently.

<![CDATA[Why ‘Chucky’ Season 3 Is Set in the White House]]> For almost four decades since the Child’s Play franchise has been around, audiences have watched the killer doll known as Chucky (voiced by Brad Dourif) wreak havoc across the country. From Chicago to New York and even Hollywood, nowhere has been safe from the pint-sized slasher’s razor sharp knife. In USA Network and Syfy’s series, Chucky, the doll was back with the first season set in the killer’s hometown of Hackensack, New Jersey, and the second at a Catholic reform school. Making a major (and quite frankly shocking) jump, Season 3 drops Chucky in Washington, DC where he’s managed to infiltrate the first family at the White House. In an interview with Collider’s Britta DeVore, franchise creator, Don Mancini, shared why the most famous home in America made for the perfect setting.

<![CDATA[Why Does 'Chucky' Always Come Back? Don Mancini Explains]]> Back in 1985, when Don Mancini began to pen the script for what would become 1988’s Child’s Play, it’s unlikely that he could’ve imagined just how big the franchise would become. After seven films, Syfy and USA Network greenlit a series based on the possessed killer doll known as Chucky two years ago. Now in its third season, Chucky remains to be a ratings hit, raking in views from new and old fans alike. During an interview with Collider’s Britta DeVore, Mancini shared his thoughts on why, no matter what, Chucky always comes back.

<![CDATA['Chucky' Creator Don Mancini Shares His Favorite Queer Slasher Icon]]> While it may not come right out and slap audiences in the face, there’s no doubt that the Child’s Play franchise is a queer one. Don Mancini, the man behind all seven movies and now the three-season-running Syfy, USA Network, and Peacock series, Chucky, has made it a point to create a space within his projects to include the LGBTQ+ community. Whether it’s the cameo appearance of the legendary icon John Waters or the fact that the main characters - Chucky (Brad Dourif) and Tiffany Valentine (Jennifer Tilly) - have a gender non-conforming kid, now known as GG (Billy Boyd, Lachlan Watson), the franchise has always held space for those looking for representation. Taking things one step further, the series’ main protagonists, Jake (Zackary Arthur) and Devon (Björgvin Arnarson) are a young queer couple, arriving full circle in Mancini’s dedication to the queer community.

Alongside Stiller, the film features Owen Wilson as Zoolander's rival, Hansel, and Will Ferrell as Mugatu, a wacky fashion designer who carries around a comically placid toy poodle and has a uniquely memorable take on the effects of foamy lattes. <![CDATA['RHOP' Season 8 Will Be Robyn Dixon's Worst]]> Robyn Dixon managed to outsmart both Andy Cohen and the producers of RHOP last season by keeping her marital woes to herself. It wasn't until the very end of Season 7 that word got out about yet another indiscretion by her then fiancé Juan Dixon. By the time the Karen Huger brought news of Juan having a rumored mistress, Robyn and Juan had already quietly dealt with the infraction and were once again a united, albeit dysfunctional front. Robyn rolled her eyes and acknowledged Juan had inappropriate conversations with a woman but assured the ladies that he was repentant, and the two were back on solid ground headed down the aisle. Andy was visibly irritated by Robyn's disregard for the platform but instead of firing her, she was asked to do a solo interview to accompany the reunion, giving details of the infraction that should've been shared earlier in the season. She was spared ridicule during season 7, but her dishonesty paired with Juan's continued disrespectful behavior and dismissive attitude have worked to make Robyn a target without any allies on the show.

<![CDATA[The Peak TV Model Is Officially Broken — And That’s a Good Thing]]> For the last decade, we’ve been living in the world of peak TV. Streamers and premium networks were throwing endless dollars at major TV shows hoping to make the next Breaking Bad or Stranger Things. The result was an odd paradox for viewers and TV writers alike; lots of opportunities to experience or create new art, but there was little in the way of long-term commitment from these new shows. Companies were now enamored with the limited-run TV program, which allowed outfits to not have to commit to long-term writer’s rooms or offer up the opportunity for writers to score significant raises if a show went into multiple seasons. It was a nightmare scenario that was one of many problems with the peak TV landscape pressing enough to inspire the writers to go on strike.

Outside of gangster films, Coppola has experimented with various genres, from biopics, romantic comedies, family films, and thrillers, showing that The Godfather only represents a fraction of his interests. Coppola’s ambition often got the better of him, and many of his grandest ideas never made it to the production stage. Merino expressed that getting hand-drawn characters, like Flounder from The Little Mermaid, and CGI characters like Moana to interact was a hurdle they had to cross to "make them blend seamlessly" as though the two characters were walking and chatting with each other down the studios' hallway.

<![CDATA[Every Disney Animated Movie Ranked from Worst to Best]]> It's hard to rank the Disney animated films, and not just because there are so many of them. These are films that mean so much to so many people, that are inherently linked to powerful memories of childhood and have informed what we so many adults consider magical. Ranking their respective strengths and weaknesses becomes as much an investigation of why you loved something as it is to their relative worth as a creative endeavor. (Divorcing yourself of those emotions is mightily challenging.) Still, I tried to do just that, and wanted to share stories from the making of the movies as well, so you know just what went into that film's success (or lack thereof). So, yes, this is a history lesson as much as it’s a critical appraisal. (My primary sources were Disney War by James B. Stewart, Creativity Inc. by Ed Catmull and Amy Wallace, and "Walt Disney" by Neal Gabler, plus the fantastic documentary films Waking Sleeping Beauty and Walt and El Grupo. I heartily recommend them all.)

<![CDATA[First ‘The Crown’ Season 6 Images Prepare for Diana’s Farewell]]> Elizabeth Debicki takes center stage in these first look photos from part one of The Crown's final season, which sees Princess Diana's turbulent life come to a tragic end in a Paris tunnel. The images, released by Netflix, show off Diana's final days as she splits her time between being a doting mother to her sons, William and Harry, and spending time with her latest beau, Dodi Fayed. Speaking about her starring role in this season, Debicki (Princess Diana) said: “I think it’s a really unique challenge as an actor, to portray those days. I really just trusted in Peter Morgan’s emotional blueprint that he created for us to follow. It’s his interpretation and I think it made emotional sense to me, so I clung to that. Because, obviously, it’s devastating and it’s fraught and we can never know.”

<![CDATA[24 Recent Movies Destined to Become Future Cult Classics]]> Nobody can predict which movies are going to be hits. While there are always factors that help a film's chances (such as being part of a pre-established franchise such as the MCU), other successes seemingly come out of nowhere, such as the recent massive financial haul for Top Gun: Maverick. Studios try their best to green-light movies they think provide the best chance of positive box office results, but sometimes it does not go to plan.

<![CDATA[We Finally Know Who Is Voicing 'Rick & Morty' in Season 7]]> Last night returned with the adventures of our beloved albeit cynical genius scientist Rick and his timid grandson Morty as Rick and Morty kicked off its seventh season. This premiere marked a significant shift, as it was the first episode without the involvement of co-creator and star Justin Roiland. Roiland's association with the show came to an end in early 2023 when he was dismissed by Adult Swim amidst allegations of sexual assault. Although the charges were subsequently dropped due to insufficient evidence, additional allegations since surfaced in September.

<![CDATA[The Scream Franchise Missed Out on a Genius Prequel Opportunity]]> Wes Craven’s Scream has become a staple in the horror genre. It not only revolutionized the horror-comedy sub-genre but also gave us a thrilling whodunnit and a new horror icon in the process. Its success, of course, went on to spawn a franchise, much like Craven’s most famous work, A Nightmare on Elm Street. Scream now has six movies under its belt, with a seventh underway. The series is rich with lore, each film connecting back to the original in some way, whether it be a direct reference, a bloodline, or, as is usually the case, going back to the franchise’s final girl Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell). But despite the copious amounts of lore and callbacks to the 1996 original, the franchise never once went back in time in the form of a prequel, which feels like a rather missed opportunity. It would be rather impossible to go back and make a prequel to Scream now, as the cast has obviously aged in the nearly 30 years since its release, and casting new actors in the iconic roles just wouldn’t work. Skeet Ulrich and Matthew Lillard are perfect fits for their characters of Billy and Stu (respectively), and you definitely can’t recast Sidney Prescott, so a prequel likely wouldn’t go well nowadays. But had the idea come about in the years after the original, there was a lot that could’ve been done to deepen the lore of that first movie.

<![CDATA[‘Saw X’ Global Box Office Continues to Impress]]> Despite the glowing critical response that it surprisingly earned, Saw X is still mostly playing like the 10th installment of a long-running horror franchise. The film’s box office performance doesn’t immediately suggest that it has been able to lure general audiences toward its unique brand of gory thrills, but that being said, it’s still delivering solid returns on a minimal investment.

<![CDATA['Grimsburg' — Everything We Know So Far About the Adult Animation Series]]> Jon Hamm seems to be going all in with his detective roles. The upcoming animated sitcom, Grimsburg, will see the Mad Men star slipping into his investigative shoes once again, voicing the role of ace detective Marvin Flute. Created by Catlan McClelland and Matthew Schlissel, the series follows Marvin, the greatest detective ever in the fictional town of Grimsburg, who has a hard time figuring out his own family. Although Hamm has played detectives and government agents in several films earlier, including 2022’s Confess, Fletch and 2023's Maggie Moore(s), his role in Grimsburg is one of the rarer ones on the small screen.

<![CDATA[‘Haunting in Venice’ Global Box Office to End as Lowest-Grossing in Trilogy]]> While domestic audiences have been largely unenthusiastic about A Haunting in Venice — the third installment in director-star Kenneth Branagh’s series of murder mystery movies based on the novels of Agatha Christie, the film is staying afloat thanks to a respectable turnout in international markets. The movie is still probably going to end its global run as the lowest-grossing entry in the trilogy, but at least it managed to save face by passing the $100 million mark at the worldwide box office.
