The winner of the 2021 Academy Award for Best International Feature Film, Another Round is a movie that starts as a hilarious idea between four friends and quickly becomes a melancholy reflection on life. It begins with a mesmerizing Mads Mikkelsen as Martin who has an otherwise normal life as a teacher. However, Martin is unhappy and looking for something more. That is when he joins his other friends and fellow teachers in drinking all the time as a test to see how it will impact their lives. It is a sweet portrait of friendship that also becomes a somber experience as their lives begin to unravel as they push themselves too far. It is another outstanding film that unites Mikkelsen and writer-director Thomas Vinterberg, who previously collaborated on the haunting film The Hunt. However, this one also sees Mikkelsen do an impressive and cathartic dance sequence, which makes it a must-see on its own. - Chase Hutchinson

A coming of age film that shows Pete Davidson has some good acting chops when paired with a solid director in Jason Orley, Big Time Adolescence is all about the pitfalls of youth and what happens when you outgrow those that you once looked up to. It is centered around Griffin Gluck as Monroe, a young kid who looks up to Davidson's Zeke despite him being the last person you would think of as being a good role model. There are a lot of expected jokes and gags that one would expect. However, there is a deeper aspect to the film that sneaks up on you as we become increasingly disillusioned with the laid back vibe of Zeke and the negative influence it has on those around him. The dialogue all feels natural and increasingly painful, making it a complicated comedy that becomes something more melancholic when you least expect it. — Chase Hutchinson

The road trip buddy comedy Plan B follows ride-or-die friends Sunny (Kuhoo Verma) and Lupe (Victoria Moroles) on their journey to Planned Parenthood for emergency contraception. After her first high school party leads to an awkward first sexual encounter and a lost condom, straight-A student Sunny panics. Unable to get Plan B from their local pharmacy thanks to South Dakota’s “conscious clause”, she recruits her sex-positive, down-for-anything best friend Lupe to go with her to the nearest Planned Parenthood in Rapid City. Not only do the friends have to contend with a closing window of viability for the pill, but they also have to make it back home before Sunny’s strict mom returns to town. Even though this raunchy comedy is absolutely created by and for women, there’s something for almost everyone in Sunny and Lupe’s journey. Plan B balances humorous and heartfelt moments effortlessly, with both emotions likely to leave you in tears. Add it to your watch list ASAP! — Brynna Arens

The romantic comedy Palm Springs is one of the best films of 2020 full-stop. The set-up is fairly simple – Andy Samberg and Cristin Millioti play strangers who meet at a wedding – but the execution is complicated and wonderful. You see, Samberg’s character has been stuck in a time loop for ages, reliving the same day over and over again. Complications arise when Millioti’s character gets sucked into the time loop as well, and a wonderfully hilarious, sweet, and introspective story ensues. This is one of the best romcoms in recent memory. – Adam Chitwood
